Stochastic mapping using forward look sonar
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates the problem of concurrent mapping and localization (CML) using forward look sonar data. Results are presented from processing of an oceanic data set from an 87 kHz US Navy forward look imaging sonar using the stochastic mapping method for CML. The goal is to detect objects on the seabed, map their locations, and concurrently compute an improved trajectory for the vehicle. The resulting trajectory is compared with position estimates computed with an inertial navigation system and Doppler velocity sonar. The results demonstrate the potential of concurrent mapping and localization algorithms to satisfy the navigation requirements of undersea vehicles equipped with forward look sonar.

A Multiple-Hypothesis Approach to Concurrent Mapping and Localization for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
This paper describes a multiple hypothesis approach to concurrent mapping and localization (CML) for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The objective of CML is to enable a mobile robot to build a map of an unknown environment, while simultaneously using that map to navigate with bounded position error. Multiple hypothesis concurrent mapping and localization (MHCML) has potential to provide ...
متن کاملTraining Radial Basis Function Neural Network using Stochastic Fractal Search Algorithm to Classify Sonar Dataset
Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBF NNs) are one of the most applicable NNs in the classification of real targets. Despite the use of recursive methods and gradient descent for training RBF NNs, classification improper accuracy, failing to local minimum and low-convergence speed are defects of this type of network. In order to overcome these defects, heuristic and meta-heuristic algorith...
متن کاملIncorporation of Delayed Decision Making into Stochastic Mapping
This paper presents a technique for incorporating delayed decision making into stochastic mapping algorithms for concurrent mapping and localization. The approach explicitly tracks the error correlations between current and previous vehicle states, enabling the initialization of map features using data from multiple time steps and improved data association decision-making. The method is illustr...
متن کاملComparative Evaluation of Occupancy Grid Mapping Methods Using Sonar Sensors
Building occupancy grid maps with sonar sensors is a challenging task due to angular uncertainty, specular reflections and crosstalk. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of two probabilistic and one heuristic approaches to the robotic mapping using real sonar data – inverse and forward sensor models and the CEMAL methods. Moreover, the two probabilistic methods are also tested pre-fil...
متن کاملObstacle Avoidance While Bottom Following for the REMUS Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
Future Naval operations necessitate the incorporation of autonomous underwater vehicles into a collaborative network. In future complex missions, a forward look capability will also be required to map and avoid obstacles such as sunken ships and reefs. Following previous work on steering control, this work examines collision avoidance behaviors in bottom following using a hypothetical forward-l...
